Whalers Bay, Deception Island / South Shetlands 063°11,3’S; 060°35,1’W

After dinner we cruised Whalers Bay, located on the inside of Deception Island. In order to enter the caldera Captain Krüß had to navigate the “National Geographic Explorer” through the narrow entrance called Neptunes Bellows. This was exciting!

Port Foster was a well-known shelter to the whalers and sealers. In those days Neptunes Window served as a lookout – to check the weather conditions outside Deception Island.

Sadly the daylight was already fading and it started to snow as we were taking a closer look at the former whaling station and the hangar. In December 1928 the first motorized flight across the Antarctic Peninsula took off from here.
