Neko Harbour; Andvord Bay / Antarctica
 64°50,7’S; 062°31,9’W

This morning I woke up to sunshine and bright blue skies - and the spectacularly beautiful scenery of Andvord Bay, located at the western side of Graham Land / the Antarctic Peninsula.
We went ashore at a small landing site called Neko Harbour; named after the „Neko“, which used to be a whale factory ship that operated in this area during the early nineteen-hundreds. This is the first time I have set foot onto the Antarctic mainland!

Yuriy, Jeroen, Mauro and Esther took me on a hike up to a viewpoint overlooking Andvord Bay.

We passed a Gentoo Penguin colony on our way.

Sort of in the middle of the colony is something square-shaped that looks like a basement. I learned that an Argentine hut used to stand here, but it was destroyed during a storm six or so years ago. The hike uphill was a bit steep at times, but we were rewarded with an outstanding view – which we enjoyed for quite a while.

We used one of the “slides” to get back down again. That was a lot of fun!!!
