Fred-Report:

Today the Purser Esther took me ashore. We landed at a place called Purchasnet on the Island of Lagoya, which is located NNW of the island Nordaustlanded.

Once ashore the two of us had to be escorted by Stephanie, a member of the Expedition Team, who carried a gun. She brought us to another group of people going for a walk. Here in Svalbard all walking groups are escorted by at least one person carrying a gun. This is a rule in Svalbard – and a good pre-caution in case a bear shows up. We found lots of interesting things on the way. There was this nice set of antlers and pretty tiny little flowers every now and then. But our main goal was to look at the Walrus, that were hauled out on the beach. We had to be very quiet in order not to disturb the animals. Gee, some of them had pretty big tusks; very impressive!
