Fred-Report:

We had left the protected seas around Stockholm late last night – so I was in bed by the time MS National Geographic Explorer started to move a little. Early this morning the island of Gotland came into sight. We were heading for Visby, the plan was to go alongside and stay in port for the day. Sadly the wind had gotten a lot stronger than originally forecasted. A pilot came out to meet us, but together with our Captain Oliver Krüß it was soon decided that it would not be safe for us to enter the harbor. A plan B was quickly made. We started heading for Kappelshamn at the north-north-western tip of Gotland (57°50,9’N; 018°47;5’E). Here we found shelter and were able to anchor. Jen, our Expedition Leader, had organized busses to come to Kappelshamn, giving us a ride to Visby.

Bus-ride to Visby

Jamie and me

Our IT Officer Anthony, Cold Cook Tanya, Sous Chef Karolina, Baker Oscar and Bartender Jamie took me along to Visby. Visby is the best preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most notable historical remains is “Ringmuren”, a 3,4 km long stone wall.

The wall is largely intact and encircles the city as well as the church ruins.

Back on board I was very happy to meet Henrik; our Hotel Manager on vacation.

Hendrik and me.

Henrik and his wife Camilla live in Visby. It was great seeing them again.

Oscar, our Baker, signed off today.

We had so much fun together – I will miss him a lot. We had a small get-together before having to say goodbye.
